Dog vs. Squirrel

My friend Gina, sent me an email with some awesome pictures that tell the story of a Lab with a squirrel.

1. Lab has baby squirrel pinned down and Mother sees it from above!

2. Mom Springs into action!!

3. Dog gets it from Mom as Baby escapes!!

4. Mom Consoles Baby.

Dog’s face says “What the Heck just happened?!!? Did I just get my butt kicked by a squirrel?!?!

When I first saw this email, I was scarred to see what happened in the 4th picture.  But I was quite relieved to find out both squirrels survived!!

Thanks Gina!

Great Marketing by Cartoon Network and Hasbro

Our son has quite a collection of Transformers toys and is always asking for more. Inside each Transformer toy package is a little foldout with pictures of other Transformers toys you can buy. We pay little attention to it, but our son calls it a map and spends a lot of time staring at it. About once a day he takes the map and brings it to us pointing and says I want this one, and about every two weeks we cave and buy another Transformer toy.

Well the last time he did this we said he has to wait until X-mas, and in fact, he has to make a list for Santa. He immediately started naming this Transformer toy and this one and this one… We said wait. You have to choose 4 things to ask Santa, of those four things, one must be a book, a toy, a game and a piece of clothing.

Without pause, our son looks at his Transformer “map” and says I want this toy, Megatron, this game, Shift Tech Optimus Prime (Image 1) and then flips the map over and continues, this book, from transformer publishing and this shirt, yellow Bumble Bee tee-shirt (Image 2).

Our Son Starts Art Class Tomorrow

Our son is 4 years old and from the evidence on our car door you can plainly see he has an interest in art. Tomorrow he starts his first art class at the local university. When he drew on our car he looked so proud. He said dad, mom, it’s a transformer. We really hope he likes art as much as we do.

Drive-in Mummy Movie -The Thunderstorm was Better

Friday we went to the drive-in to see the new mummy movie. The movie was not that great, but the weather was. In the movie, just as the mummy was starting to stir a thunderstorm that was slowly moving towards us really opened up, and started lighting up the sky all over the place, just at the right moments in the movie. Lots of “flash bang” lightning strikes to the right, left and behind the outdoor screen pretty much in sync with what was actually happing in the film; it made the movie even better and more fun to watch. Yeah part of it was the fear of being “zotted” by a million zillion volts of electricity like in those news stories of cows being hit by lighting. Here we are, in a tin can, surrounded by other tin cans, in Illinois, where there are no tall structures or trees to attract lightning, just us cars and the drive-in screen. Once the storm arrived, and our windows fogged up, we found finger painting on our car’s foggy windows more entertaining than the movie. Unfortunately, finger painting can hold a four year old for just so long, so after a short while, we decided to leave the flick. We will rent it later. We liked all the earlier mummy movies, and this one was about on par with them, maybe it was the weather. Most mummy movies make for great Saturday afternoon horror adventure flicks this one did not.

Back to the Ethics of Scientific Imaging

I came across this today. The Scientific Working Group on Imaging Technology (SWGIT), has articles on the use of imaging technology in the criminal justice system in the United States. If you need a refresher on correct methods for imaging, or have concerns about your present imaging methods, check out how the people in the legal system have worked things out on the pages referenced here.

Ethics in scientific imaging has always been a fuzy subject, just think how hard it was to explain the objects seen through telescopes to laymen, and peers back in the day of, say Galileo.  With software like Photoshop making the craft of darkroom touch-up basically childsplay, it is important to find balance among your peers. The SWGIT people need to ensure their images hold up in court. Scientists usually have a peer review process that helps to define data worthy images from all out fraud. Peer review guides the scientist away from making big mistakes like the two headed rhino as a new species, instead of just a well shot photo.
