Oh Boy Here is a Grass is Greener Email

Interesting email had the sender saying “i SO have the green acres song in my head right now!”

Subject: 8) – Greener Grass

Sometimes, we try too hard to get to the greener grass. In the process, we end up in trouble……..

And when you find yourself in trouble and you’re stuck in a situation that you can’t get out of, there is one thing you should always remember…..

Not everyone who shows up……
Is there to help you!!!!

Wow. Um, thanks Gina.

HG TV Dream home time again

We always like this time of the year when we can sign up for an impossibly expensive house and dream about winning it, knowing all the while, that we really don’t want to win it, because winning the give away would most likely bankrupt us. The cool part is, and most irrational, is that even if we did win it, and only owned it a day, that one day of ownership would be worth it, just to say we won a house in a raffle once.

Three things I learned this weekend

Just a quick note on some fun stuff that we did this weekend. Besides having some of the best home made chili ever and waking up to some very yummy blueberry pancakes the next morning. I learned that:

My brother has a cylon toaster.

That Ron Zacapa X0 is a very good rum.

And finally, if you want to make truly the best drinks ever you should get a book that describes how it was done back in the 1800s. This means figuring out how to work with chunk sugar and egg whites to filter out impurities. It is all worth it if you want your own simple syrup.

That is why I like to visit my brother, I learn all kinds of cool things.

I wish grown ups could remember being kids

I just looked down at my coffee mug from fourbucks and noticed it had writing on it. Stuff like “I wish this”, and I “wish that”. Blah blah blah… What caught my eye was the one that said “I wish grown ups could remember being kids.” That got me thinking, mainly because I am a grown up. First off: Holy cow! I am a grown up, and in my 5th decade! Wow. Anyway. I still feel like a kid; a couple aches and pains here and there, but still a child at heart.

What I find most profound is that I have a young child, and well, I found that I have been remembering more and more about my childhood as I watch my son explore and grow in the environment around me. You know, the same way as when you come into a house were someone is cooking lasagna and you smell the spices and cheese on the warm air currents coming from the kitchen, and you start thinking back how your grandmother made lasagna, and then your mind wanders off to little details about that particular day and that meal, years way back, at your grandparents house with the red and white plaid table cloth and sticky naugahyde table chairs. Of course, everyone has some little memory sparked by the smell of food and I think also by watching children play. Having a child of your own also helps you remember things too about your childhood. With the exception of that one really smelly diaper change, watching my son grow up has really been one of the most enjoyable and most memorable experiences in my life.

All grown ups remember when they were kids, we just don’t telegraph it to the world, because if we did people would think us to be crazy. So basically, your wish has come true, coffee cup printer person for fourbucks. If you don’t think so, well, maybe you should have worded your wish better. Maybe “I wish grown ups could remember being kids so when I draw cool patterns with a rock on the side of the new car, they would appreciate the value of my creativity and not ground me for life.” Something like that may do. Eh, wishes are the easy way out, just work hard at communicating with the adults in your life, finding their weaknesses through clever discourse and exploit them to sway judgments toward your desired goals. Alright, that will never happen, not against adults, they know everything. Stick to wishing, the odds are about the same for getting what you want as they are for trying to explain things to them. The coolest thing about a wish, is just saying “I wish” can be somewhat calming to the spirit if for no other reason than to take your mind away from the moment.

I wish I could stop writing about this. Done.

A Couple Stereo Microscope Choices

If you are on a budget try an Olymus SZ61 or SZ51 stereo microscope, combined with the DP21 Bayer Mask CCD camera with firewire 1394 should work well for you. Both the SZ61 or SZ51 stereo microscopes appear to be well made and are the perfect workhorse scopes for any lab. The DP21 Bayer Mask CCD camera with firewire 1394a is a 2 megapixel digital color camera with that is easy-to-use, and is a good camera for recording objects under a dissecting microscope.

No matter what scope you go with, you will need a decent light source. Keep the lamp simple, some sort of halogen lamp with a light guide option for reflected light imaging. Transmitted illumination is helpful and can always be added in the future; if you are looking for places to cut the price, cut the transmitted light option. The CCD camera should come with a basic imaging package that will make white balancing and exposures easy. Ask the Olympus sales rep about options like this.

Zeiss has a great line of stereomicroscopes also. They have a very good low cost Bayer Mask CCD camera called the AxioCam IC. Basic researchers may like the Zeiss Stemi 2000C or CS with the AxioCam ICc 1 camera. The ICc 1 has two firewire interfaces so you can connect two cameras to each other and then to a fire wire port on the PC. Their AxioCam MRc 5 bayer mask CCD camera is also nice, if you plan to do low light imaging and still want color. Monochromatic CCDs have no Bayer mask and perform the best for low light imaging which generally focused toward fluorescence imaging and traditional compound light microscopes. I really like Zeiss AxioVision software.

For stereo microscopes there are two optics options:

The Greenough Concept is the most common, basically the lens is not easily interchangeable but can be replaced. They have two distinct lenses in parallel light paths set at a discrete angle to create the stereo image for your eyes. This design is great for high topographical relief. A stereoscope with Greenough optics tend to be lower cost and is perfect for nearly everyone needing this type of microscope for routine detail work. This is what people commonly see in their labs at school. Olymus SZ61 or SZ51 and the Zeiss Stemi 2000C or CS are Greenough Concept scopes.

The Telescope Concept (CMO = Center Mounted Objective) starts with just one lens collecting the light and has two microscope systems arranged in parallel that share that one common objective. The stereo angle is formed by the extra-axial pairs of rays. You get the same image as in the Greenough Concept, but you can replace the first lens to improve your working distance and change you magnification range just like changing lenses on a 35mm camera. This design is better for flatter surfaces and small objects like salt grains. I am pretty sure this is what my endodontist used during my root canal last week. My favorite picks for this design, in order, are the SteREO Discovery V8 which is a good starter, next the SteREO Discovery V12, which is just darn amazing for the price. Gonzo is the SteREO Discovery V20 because of its 20:1 zoom range and all the parts and pieces that can be added like multiple cameras, epi-fluorescence and advanced imaging modalities like DIC and dark field, this is the perfect multi-user facility instrument. The V20 is too pricey for the average PI unless you are very, very serious about stereo imaging in your research, say for crystal growth or surface fracture analysis.

Zeiss is my number one choice. Olympus is my number two. Both companies offer great support in the US for their equipment. I should point out that dissecting microscopes are very low maintenance. Contact Olympus sales or Zeiss sales for more help on determining which microscope will work best in your lab. Also ask them for a demo of the camera and scope together. Please, try systems from both companies, and judge/compare them against a common sample or object that you actually plan to image often on the scope. Lots of times they will let you test the demo system in your lab for a week or so or maybe over lunch take advantage of the demo time without the sales rep present.

Wrong Book Store Email

Honestly when I got this one, I read it, and well, I did not see how it was funny. I was reading Wong Fook and Hing Book as two separate objects. My office mate was laughing at me, because I did not see what was so funny. I was thinking there should be an apostrophe there… Wong’s or Fook’s Hing-store. I started to think, hinge-store, of course it’s a hinge store, not a book store. Not Funny. Well I am an idiot or I just don’t swear enough.

Here is the joke email in all it’s email glory:

If you can’t find the book
you want

You’re probably shopping
at the
wrong &*^%$ book store email image

Thanks Scott. I get it now. I blame it on not having enough coffee this morning.

If you read the store name out loud it may help.

Latest iPhone Software Update

I just had to grab this image. The iPhone software update 3.1.2 says it resolves the intermittent issue that may interrupt cellular network services until restart. Gee I have had the iPhone since the fall of 2007 and this has always been an issue. Support would say just restart the iPhone. Well I hope it works with this fix.
